Faith Identity Struggles Womanhood

You Were Born to Stand Out

Guest Post by Grace Maples
I put my blouse on and looked in the mirror. Why was I wearing this? This wasn’t me. I wanted to be loved more by those around me, and I was compromising who God had made me to be. I took it off and put my t-shirt back on.

Do you ever find yourself looking for ways to be accepted, but come up short?

Maybe if you get that grade, that invite, you’ll finally be good enough.

I struggled in this area for a long time. As young women, we often find our acceptance in friends, guys and parents. We want to fit in with them and look good in their eyes, but we miss the danger of that mindset.

We try to fit into society’s mold of how a woman should dress, act, walk, who she should hang out with, what boys she should be around, and what she should watch. We try to succumb to our friends’ expectations, our parents expectations, and guys expectations of us.

And, it’s hard! Friend, I know. I’ve walked that road. That road is not only hard. It’s unnecessary and pointless. You are accepted already!

You will never be just like “those” girls. You weren’t created to be like everyone else. We were all created differently and made to serve a different purpose in God’s Kingdom.

“I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made…” (Psalm 139:14)

God loves you for who you are. You don’t have to put on a show in front of him because he knows who you are underneath, and he loves you for you. He created you to be you!

Not only that, friend, but He accepts you. If you are a true Christ follower, and you have received God’s forgiveness, you don’t need to look for acceptance anywhere else. You already have it!

“to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.” (Eph. 1:6)

In turn, your acceptance in Christ isn’t determined by what clothes you wear, who you’re friends with, or the likes you got on Instagram. Your acceptance is determined by Christ’s work on the cross to save you from your sin. And it’s already done!

Be who God has created you to be! A young woman loving and obeying Jesus, seeking to serve others and glorify God in everything you do. This, my friend, is who we’re called to be.

Being accepted by everyone has its quirks, I’m sure. But it ends up very lonely and pointless.

The world will be gone one day, and what will all that seeking acceptance from others amount to? Nothing. The invitation to that girls’ party or that guy who noticed us won’t matter for eternity.

What will last is what we did for Christ. Did we serve Him and obey Him with our very lives? This should be our life’s desire, instead of seeking acceptance from others. Because, acceptance from the world can’t begin to compare with acceptance in Christ.

What do you think?

When have you seen yourself searching for acceptance from the people around you?

What are your favorite Bible verses about acceptance in Christ?
