4 Keys to Creative Goal Setting: for the Christian Girl

2017 is coming to a close and the new year is right around the corner. If you’re like me, you’re probably thinking about what goals and resolutions you should make for 2018.

Normally, I think up a list of New Year’s resolutions and end up forgetting all about them in a couple weeks. I want to make goals that I will go after and thrive from. That’s why this year is going to be different.

Here are 4 keys to creative goal setting: for the Christian girl.
1. Choose a new goal each month.

As a Christian girl, I want all of my goals to be God-honoring. This idea is perfect for strengthening relationships or overcoming bad habits! In all, you will have 12 goals for the year.

By choosing one goal for each month, it will be easier to stay focused and lower your level of stress.

For example, maybe you want to spend the first month building a better relationship with your siblings. You could focus on showering them with kindness or being more patient.

Or you could choose a goal to overcome a certain habit. Personally, I have a hard time with biting my nails. My goal for a month could be growing them out and then rewarding myself by getting them done at the end of the month.

Choosing a new goal every month is a great way to stay on track throughout the coming year.

2. Pick out one word and live it out for the year.

A couple years ago, the leader of the teen class at my church had each of us pick out a word to live out for a quarter of the year.

We picked out words such as serve, love, kindness, listen, etc.

I really loved this idea because, not only did it help me focus on what’s truly valuable, it opened my eyes to opportunities I could use to minister to others.

Another way to do this is to pick out a new word every month (similar to the first type of goal, but you’d be picking a word rather than creating your own goal).

Jesus calls us to love our neighbor as ourselves. Choosing goals that will help us do that is a great way to spend the new year!

3. Make goals that will strengthen your character.

Most of the time, New Year’s resolutions are things like eating healthier, working out more, staying organized, etc. Those are all great goals! Especially if you set up a plan to help you stay on track.

Another way to be creative with your goal setting, however, is to make goals that will strengthen your character. For example, maybe there’s someone you don’t get along with. You could choose to reach out to them or be extra encouraging.

Even staying away from certain unhealthy foods can help you practice self-control!

A good way to find goals that will strengthen your character is to line them up with Galatians 4:23, 22, the Fruit of the Spirit!

4. Keep a journal and write about your progress.

Let’s say you’re starting a health plan for the new year. It’s a good idea to keep a record of your water intake, what you’re eating, how much you exercise.

Or maybe you’re choosing to choose a few goals that focus on the inside, such as being more patient or helping others.

In that case, keeping a journal of what you’ve learned so far can be an encouragement on days that you’re feeling discouraged and want to give up.

Don’t be afraid to write about the hard parts of your journey. That will help you see what things you need to work on the most and push you to do so.

Be creative with your goal setting this year!

Whether you choose one of these ways or your own, I’d love to hear about what you come up with! Let me know what some of your New Year’s plans and goals are in the comment section below!
