Sweet Sixteen: A Promise Kept Forever

December 4, 2016 brought along a couple of surprises.  First, I turned 16! And second, my dad had something special planned for that evening. Here’s the story.

My family pulled into a coffee shop and my dad invited me to come in with him. Little did I know what was about to take place.

We ordered only 2 drinks, to my surprise, considering the fact that Kierstin and my mom were waiting in the car.

After the young man working at the counter finished spraying delicious whipped cream on top of our hot chocolates, my dad took us to a table to sit down.

We chatted a little bit and then he pulled out a few pieces of paper. He told me that the reason we were here was because he had a letter he wanted to read to me!

It said how much he loves me and how blessed he is that I am his daughter and am striving to live a life honoring to God. Then he pulled out a purity ring!

As I looked at it, he showed me that the inside said the words ‘A Promise Kept Forever’ and went on to tell me what those words meant.

I’d like to share with all of you the 3-fold meaning within those words.

1. My promise to God

I’ve committed myself to being sexually pure, not just for my future husband, but for Jesus Christ. According to Ephesians 5:3, we should not have even a hint of sexual immorality or impurity. Not even a hint. Being pure doesn’t just mean saving sex for marriage, it’s so much more than that.

If we are to live pure and God-honoring lives, then we must guard what goes into our minds as well. One of the ways that my family and I have striven to keep our minds pure is through the movies we watch. Some people have the mindset that movies and TV shows don’t really affect how they think or act, but I can guarantee you that what we watch plays an active role in what goes into our minds.

For me and my family, we have placed Philippians 4:8 on the wall next to our TV and we have chosen not to watch shows that continually swear, use the Lord’s name in vain, or have inappropriate scenes. This has helped me enormously on keeping my mind where it should be.

God, our Heavenly Father, loves us in a way that only He can. As his daughters, we should strive to live a life of purity, not only for our future husbands, but because we want to honor God with the minds, bodies, and hearts he has given to us.

2. My parents promise to me

The second meaning that my purity ring symbolizes is my parents’ promise to always be here for me and guide me in the way I should go.

It says in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up your child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.”

I’m am so thankful that I have parents who want to teach me and guide me towards God’s plan for my life. They have always been here for me to point me to God’s love and grace, which brings me to the third symbol of my purity ring.

3. God’s promise to me

God has always been here and will continue to be here for me. He loves me like no one else can!

God is full of grace and mercy and, even though I don’t deserve it, He still blesses me with His unfailing love.

Romans 8:38-39 says, “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

So there you have it! Those are the 3 promises symbolized by a beautiful purity ring from my dad.

Whether you have a ring as a reminder or not, I encourage you to find a way to keep your promises to God and His promise to you in your heart.

What do you think?

  1. What is a way that you have reminded yourself of living pure for Christ?
