Has anything ever looked so good that you felt there was no possible way you could resist it?
It could be anything from a yummy milkshake to the taste of ‘sweet revenge’. We’ve all struggled with temptation at one time or another. Yours may be different from the guy next to you.
Maybe you feel drawn to gossiping while someone else feels tempted to cheat in school.
Maybe you can’t keep your eyes away from sinful things on the internet while someone else’s mouth waters anytime they’re around alcohol.
There are so many types of temptations. Most of the time the desire is so strong that we feel we literally can’t resist it.
I’ve put together 10 Bible verses to help you battle temptation.
I hope you find them as encouraging and life-changing as I have.
1. Hebrews 2:18
“For because He Himself [Jesus] has suffered when tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.”
2. 1 Corinthians 10:13
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
3. Matthew 26:41
“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
4. James 1:12
“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”
5. James 4:7
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
6. Ephesians 6:11
“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”
Read Ephesians 6:11-17 to learn about the armor of God.
7. James 1:13-16
“Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.”
8. Hebrews 4:15
“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One [Jesus] who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.”
9. 1 John 4:4
“…for He [Jesus] who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
10. Proverbs 3:5
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”
Challenge: The next time you feel tempted to do something you know is wrong, don’t make ‘yes’ an option.
Instead, say or read one of these Bible verses and choose God’s way.
Our sinful desires can seem like they will overtake us. Sometimes we feel that we can’t go without something; as if we’re trapped and can’t break free.
God is so much more powerful than the temptations we face! If we give Him a chance and choose beforehand to follow what He says in the Bible, we can and will have the strength to say ‘no’ to temptation.
